A B O U T T H I S S I T E
I originally created this site back in 2000 as a historical tribute to my old ship, the USCGC Tamaroa. When the abandoned Tamaroa was donated to the then newly formed Tamaroa Maritime Foundation, I allowed the Foundation to use this site to publicize the restoration of the vessel as well as to pass on news and information about the Foundation and its works.
Recently the foundation decided to abandon 48 years of U.S. Coast Guard Service in favor of the 3 years the Tamaroa spent in U.S. Naval Service during World War II. Not only did they change the name of the foundation from the "Tamaroa Maritime Foundation" to that of the "Zuni Maritime Foundation," but they also changed the official name of the vessel from the Tamaroa to the Zuni. They also established their own web site and abandoned this one without a word, taking with them all the material and content that I had created over the years.
So now the Tamaroa will essentially become a floating tribute to the Navy Ocean Going Salvage Tugs or ATF's. A worthy enough endeavor, if the Tam had spent the majority of her career as a Navy Ship. We should have seen it coming... silly stuff like we're painting her grey because the paint is cheap and available... We're restoring the crews quarters back to what it was when the Navy crewed her for historical purposes... We're changing the bridge back to it's 1940's configuration... Changing the name of the newsletter to the "Mighty Z Tribune" etc.
I put the blame on myself for helping to let this happen. In recent years, I hadn't been able to be active with the Foundation, other than doing their infrequent web updates. I put the other part of the blame on the Coast Guard itself, for not only putting legal and every other roadblock possible in the way, but also not coming together as a community to save the Coast Guard legacy of a truly unique vessel.
So I will create a virtual home for the Tamaroa and help preserve her Coast Guard identity. I will not support in any way, shape, or form the efforts of the now Zuni Maritime Foundation. They showed their true colors and it is all Navy Gray. If you wish to find their new site feel free to google it -- I will not post a link. Who knows maybe, at some point, the Tam will return to her Coast Guard roots. Stranger things have been known to happen.
